iStudio Update

After multiple request, we have decided to re-arrange the istudio images from chronological order to alphabetical. This will insure that you find your favorite shop within seconds, while before it took hours. Yet, we are a little sad because, sometimes, it was fun just to get lost and wonder around. This update will be followed soon by a complete overhaul of the istudio gallery into a more manageable and faster version. Think of it as istudio 2.0 or istudio ipad update..... We would love to hear your thoughts and please spread the word and let’s get more people involved.

We’ve been meaning to write a blog post for a while but haven't managed to do so.. If there was ever a procrastinating contest i would possibly hold the record.. So here i am now, hopefully back for good. Spring was on its way and was really beautiful a week ago, but this last week its been really wintery and cold again. Cant wait for better sunnier days :) We've been very busy in the workshop for the last month and i thought to give you a small hint on that we've been working on. Some say that, “Fuck you is the new thank you.” Well, I don’t know about that because every time someone does me a favor and I promptly turn to them and say, “Why, fuck you very much.” I usually get hit in the face, so I guess we’ve put that rumors to rest. Seriously, “fuck you very much” is an image posting blog from Denmark, similar to Dropular ...and ffffound, both of which are “MHB” (must have bookmarked). What does FUVM have that the others don’t? Well, it’s not what it has as much as what it doesn’t have, that counts. FFFFound and Dropular get updated ravenously throughout the day, which makes looking through the blog tiresome. On the other hand, FUVM has only a couple images a day added, which gives it that more personal feel. ... I spent some time in California and obviously was exposed to Ansel Adams. Ansel had this gift that made me start loving photography - regardless of the photo, you (the viewer) seemed to be standing next to the camera. Just a bit of info, we live in a very touristy part of Corfu, so for the summer months we are working 16 hours a day. Now that the season is over, we are focusing all our energy back into Etsy and Mod3rnart.com and You!! Both MFM-Apparel and Variation also create art forms which we have never featured here at Mod3rnart - We love the new stuff!!! Kathiroussel over at Gindstone Girl's Daily was a super kool kat and did a feature on our little istudio art project and it turned out amazing. Grindstone is a super-stunning modern blog that is so gorgeous to the eyes, it gives you cavities - I got 2 from my last visit! While it does not sole feature jewelry, it does have its fair share and tons of featured artists from our etsy world. Worth stopping by for a peek but watch out for those cavities!

So I get up this morning and like every morning, I head on over to the old computer to see if I have any Etsy love. ... Not only some hearts, not only a feature, not only some love but a storque article! Ameliamagritte has put together a very special Storque article about, "Right-Hand Rings With The Frisky’s Amelia Parry." The article deals with unique, gorgeous and affordable etsy rings: "Beyoncé says that if he likes you, he should put a ring on it. For her, this translates into a $5 million diamond, but for the rest of us without Jay-Zs in our lives, there are still tons of gorgeous, original, and affordable options. ... All of these babies will fit your right ring finger just as well." There are some stunning works in this collection and these amazing artists get some marketing help - which is always great. The Storque is a great place to expose the etsy world to some amazing finds, so get writing people! I'm working on a piece that involves many of our regular blog followers, so get ready!!!

Hi everyone!! We have been away for a while but here is our come-back!! The summer tourist season has started here in Greece and we are working 12 hours a day. This will continue for the next 5 months-hope we make it. Yet, the time away has given us the time to find some really kool sites and Cloud 9 is one of these "bad-boys." "My blog is devoted to: visual inspiration, faith, natural living, slow food, yoga, fashion, promoting emerging indie artists & designers & more!" Cloud 9 is a combo of so many things it's hard to pin a title on it. At its core: it is a blog but it also has a marketplace, advertising, gallery, feature, news, contests and so on. There are all kinds of happenings-even submissions so go on over and who knows, you might get featured!!

So I was browsing around the etsy forum the other day and ran across a post by SpareButton, in which she was asking for etsy artists to feature. Well, you don't have to ask me twice and so I signed up! Today the feature went up on SpareButton's blog which is titled "Oh!! I like that!" Rocking title for a blog and so was the feature. We've had some brilliant artists of late and today's feature is no exception by any means. What we've tried to do with the weekly features, besides exposing Etsy's artists to the masses, is to show many different types of art forms-check out GrocGroc and Nooshka!! GrocGroc: Working as a pair has been working for us, here at Mod3rnart and from the images above (which rock), GrocGroc is a power-house team. With fresh designs, ultra modern shapes and brilliant colors, GrocGroc has such a balanced eye for jewelry. My favorite piece (2nd from the left) is so amazing-never thought about combining tennis and rings. ... Nooshka: Etsy was my first real exposure to sewing and doll making, this is not to say I had no interest earlier-just that I had no items to view. Now I am fascinated and Nooshka's stunning work makes me want to be more involved in this magical world. When looking at the images above, you can see life in these dolls, you can see a small twinkle of a soul-glowing to get out. ... Nooshka's work is second to none in my book-so go and check the work out!! ...Also you can see all our featured artists here and who knows, they might give us a crazy giveaway!

Masaoms

While developing this blog and all along the way, we have made many friends and meet tons of interesting/talented/genius minded people-Masaoms is one of these people. A naturally talented jewelry maker, she is able to mix the metallic aspect of nature together with the duality (roughness+color) of stone. This is a marriage that takes a very aesthetic eye, for while these materials are both natural, nature has not paired them thus. Above, we see work from Masaoms's new series, "Ofelia" which she describes as, "Inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet. ...Masaoms's previous collection was entitled, "Isis Rings" and samples of this collection can be seen above and bellow. ... The silver acts as a mantel for the stone and the eye completely forgets about the metal-it is the color that transfixes. This is the true test of a silversmith, not just the cutting and the soldering but the marriage of materials, the pairing of ingredients-the placing of a soul inside each of these once cold shapes. ...I wish all of you to go and see Masaoms's site and blog, as she is a truly amazing artist-plus you get to practice your Spanish. I would also like to point out that all the pictures of Masaoms's jewelry were taken by Dario Rumbo and the modeling was by Masaoms's sister, Gemma Sanchez. Design assistance was by Oriol Nicolas and I am glad Masaoms pointed out this fact because we all need help creating and exposing our work.

We got a kool Spanish feature today from a close friend that makes ridiculously amazing jewelry-you need to check out Naventin. The feature dealt with our on going-super-kool art project....iStudio and while my spanish is not perfect (or not good at all) it was still a beautiful feature. Take a peek... Naventin's blog and etsy shop are perfect examples of the power of a clean-mod3rn-gorgious site, that emphasises the art and not the framing site. Websites are great but they should not take from the art by being over-powering. Last weeks sign-ups for Featured Artist was overpowering-so much so that I could not for the life of me pick two people.....so I picked four. ... Both artists create amazing work and the best part was that they both worked in different mediums-thus we were able to experience dos (that's all the spanish I know) art forms. Well, this week is no different-so get your fingers ready to start clicking and say hello to Benconservato and BloomStudios. ...Benconservato: "I'm an Australian artist, illustrator, printmaker, photographer who spends most of my time creating things." I wish I could spend most of my time creating things-most of my time is spent destroying things :( One realizes right away from looking at the art work, that Benconservato spends some of the time in our world and a lot of time in a world I wish I could get a passport to!! ... It isn't art work filled with fear or death as some might think from a quick glance but rather a childlike imagination that has grown with an adult body. ...BloomStudios: Balance::Strength::Elegance this is at the heart of every BloomStudios creation and even the untrained eye (me) can see this foundation. Bloom's collection is made from a wide variety of materials consisting of many different types of precious/semi precious stones and precious metals like Silver and gold. ... iStudio Feature

iSudio took another major step into society today with a feature done by etsy artist and blogger Snou. The post can be found here and please take the time to read it because Snou does an amazing job of really looking into the meaning of our work spaces. "When you see a workshop you see more clearly that what comes out of this place was made by a person, lovingly sitting in front of a worktable, making decisions with eye and heart." This is the path I see for istudio-exposure through blogging and features but also through personal analysis by the people participating or viewing. Art is always a two way road-it is never eye with no heart. There needs to be emotion on the part of the person and the art-without this, there is no point. Go check it out.....

You know how you always here the phrase, "Location, Location, Location" in terms of physical store location and how to increase traffic to that specific business-well here is one I just made up, "Packaging, Packaging, Packaging." I know it doesn't flow the same way but it is super important, especially to artists that work from home but want that professional touch. Imagine this: You just created this wonderful item and someone buys it as soon as you placed it on etsy or any other site you use-so you get it ready and go to ship it. ... If your packaging is not as unique as the item inside, your customer starts off with the wrong impression even before opening to see what's inside. It's hard for us artists to agree with this because we believe in the item (the art) but in todays market (especially etsy) you need to be unique and one important aspect of this uniqueness is the packaging. "Packaging is a very important marketing strategy to glamorize your product in order to attract the consumer’s attention. Sometimes packaging is so important that it cost more than the product itself in order to lure the consumers to buy it. Packaging should definitely be included in the 4 major P’s of marketing (product, place, promotion and price)." ...Lovely package is this amazing site that displays beautiful packaging from all over the world and for every type of product you can think of. ... Anyway, the important thing for us to remember is that selling incorporates many things and one of the most important is packaging.

iStudio-Update 2

iStudio has turned from a crazy-whimzical art project idea to something of substance and I love it!!! Etsy artists from all over have submitted pictures of their studios/workshops/work-areas/work tables/place of creation and it is quickly turning into so much more than I imagined. If you don't know what iStudio is, here is the info: "iStudio was born from the idea that, "where artists work is sometimes just as interesting as the work itself." After seeing several workshops/studios we quickly came to the conclusion that this was also an art form; more of an anthropological artform." Here is what I see for istudio: I want it to keep expanding-for more and more people to submit pictures and for it to grow into a full blown etsy canvas. I have great hope in this but I will need your help, so let's start letting people know about this project!!! Invite the artists you love, hate, admire, distain to the party because as iStudio grows, it will look like a.......( I have a secret not yet revealed). Interested in joining, E-MAIL me a picture-

WOW-Featured

We got featured and I don't mean, "In a mug-shot." Oceanside Creations was nice enough to feature a couple of our jewelry pieces and a cute little interview (the part about my constant drug use as a youth is all lies) on their blog, so please go on over and check it out. Here are the pieces that were featured and "Girl with the Pearl Ring" is still my favorite. Oceanside's blog is an etsy-packed powerhouse, with artists from all over etsy's vast universe pictured and featured. Oceanside has put together a perfect example of the kind of talent etsy finds and creates (not a shameless promo comment regarding me). "The Paper N Stitch blog is a design and style blog that features artists, makers, crafters, and indie labels. In addition to these features, Paper N Stitch also features DIY projects and tutorials, fashion and home decor." So, without further ado.....ladies and gents, I present the Swiss Army Knife of blogs. P&S may not be Swiss but their blog/Exhibition site/Shops/Products and so on resemble that MacGyver like tool in so many ways. The blog is updated 3-5 times a day, so you can return often to find fresh/ new/infomative/ posts that will get your fingers clicking. The layout is very warm, icon based but not ultra modern, so you almost get the feeling it has a country style to it. If you're looking for featured artists, they got tons and the best part for me: tutorials!!! That's right, a whole section dedicated to teaching us how to make different kool items. Check it out.....

Every week I tell myself that I'm going to make a new system for picking the "Featured Artists," thus making it easier on myself and every week it gets harder and harder. Our site has been up for a little over a month now and the one striking revelation I have come up with is, "There is a ton of ridiculously talented people on etsy!" This week is no different by any means, as we have two wonderful artists, in two very different fields. ... Haroldandjane is our first artist this week (pieces seen above) and she comes to us from Seattle WA. I've known H&J for some time now and her personality is so much more than just artistic; she is a combination of humor-passion-drive-life-love and these attributes can be seen in her work. ... Koolest little tidbit of info about H&J's jewelry....each piece is named after a song lyric, so check them out in our gallery and try to guess the songs. ...FrenchPressKnits: Is our second featured artist this week (pieces seen above) and from the moment I saw her beautifully-fuzzy creations, I wished for winter to arrive early. Aesthetically gorgeous and functionally perfect, FPK's pieces make us all wish we had the patience to knit (or at least lie and say we can.) From slippers to scarves-mary janes to pillow cases, each one of FrenchPressKnit's designs is original in thought and construction, with a massive emphasis on professionalism. ...Remember, the hand made revolution begins with our support and passion, so leave some comments and spread the word......who knows what great giveaway might happen....

We have been so very luck to be featured by such amazing sites and today it happened again. IndieFixx was super-kool and featured our Bow-Tie earrings on their site - it blew my mind (it's still blown and hurts). Oddly enough, IndieFixx was a site I was in the middle of exploring to feature on this blog-life....you freak me out sometimes (often). So, the good news is that the feature is awesome, especially since Jen incorporated the earrings into a whole vintage outfit and this post will be the first in a series on IndieFixx. Do you like Design? Do you like Milk? Do you like designing with milk? Well, design-milk.com has to do with only one of these and we'll let you guess which one. Design Milk is a blog dedicated to art, architecture, & design but with a little extra in mind. Each blog post in design-milk not only acts as an informative piece of lit but also as a kind of go-between, bridging you and the item/shop the article is about. It's like being told about a wonderful piece of art and then, after showing interesting, that very same person takes you to meet the artist. They receive no money from sales and get all their economic support from sponsors, thus there is no forced voice in the reading. Go and check them out...

iSTUDIO-UPDATE

We had our first two iStudio artists (KimberlyRose & YellowGoat) join the party yesterday and so far the gallery looks beautifully-human. For those not knowing about iStudio, let me give a small reminder or you can look five posts down. iStudio was born from the idea that, "where artists work is sometimes just as interesting as the work itself." After seeing several workshops/studios (fancy names meaning-where you work), we quickly came to the conclusion that this was also an art form; more of an anthropological artform. So what does this mean? Well, we are going to post pictures of studios from all over the world and we want you to join in. E-mail your picture (yes, one picture, so make it a good one) to us, with your info (name/shop/web address) and we take care of the rest. We ask one thing in return, please contribute to our blog, whether it is posting a comment here or in our weekly featured artist contest or Weekly free art giveaway-be involved!!! Let us know what you think.

ETSY Hacked

No, we didn't get hacked but ETSY did.....in a way. Before you freak out, let me explain because it's actually a good thing. There are a lot of things about etsy that we would all like to change, case in point: Quickly knowing where you have posted in the forum: Creating a new listing based on an existing one: Adding zoom options on pictures in your shop/other's shop: and the list goes on. Well, someone smarter:) than us has figured it out (I know, they do exist) Let me introduce you to, "etsyhacks." This mysterious man/women has created "scripts" that run within FireFox, which in turn add countless functionalities to etsy. As of right now, these scripts will only run on FireFox (best browser) but there are plans on bringing it to IE, Safari, Opera and Chrome in the near future. I have been using the scripts for a couple days now and see no negative effect on my browser nor computer. This, combined with craftopolis and craftcult make up for the things etsy should have as part of its site. Check it out people and leave your questions and comments here....

This week is no different, with Helen Gotlib and Shay Dodson giving one huge recession antidote-giveaway to you. Not one but two beautiful pieces can be won this week , so let me tell you a little about them. What it all comes down to is this, "Twitter and Google will rule the world!!!" Yet, in the mean time, we can all get along....right? TwitPic is a gem of a site that simply allows you to share images on twitter. Now, this can be done in three different ways: by phone, by their ARI or from the site itself-simple right? Best of all, if you have a twitter account, your all set, no need to sign up to another account. (thank god because all these sites mean that I now have 7.3 billion Usernames/Passwords :(

This week we find ourselves with two featured artists again and if you find yourselves saying, "but why, mod3rnart?" We think the work more than speaks for itself! While from a distance, the theme and medium that our two featured artists have created, might seem similar but by taking a closer look, you truly see how independent and unique each artist is. ...Her observations of people and customs in Japan, China and Israel have influenced her perception of the human body and how expressive it is. See her amazing work in our Gallery. Helen's work is in the first two images located above. Shay Dodson: "Above all, my paintings express a love for paint itself; the fleshy, textural quality of oil paint and its luminescence - its thick opacity versus liquid transparency. Shay's work speaks so loudly about the animation of art and you can see her beautiful work in our Gallery. As always, make sure to visit our featured artist's etsy shops (Helen's or Shea's) for all artists help and support each other. We promised surprises and we don't lie. So here goes: We have added a new section to our gallery called iStudio and the whole point is "YOU!" iStudio was born from the idea that, "where artists work is sometimes just as interesting as the work itself." After seeing several workshops/studios, we quickly came to the conclusion that this was also an art form; more of an anthropological artform. So what does this mean? Well, we are going to post pictures of studios from all over the world and we want you to join in. E-mail your picture (yes, one picture, so make it a good one) to us, with your info (name/shop/web address) and we take care of the rest. We ask one thing in return, please contribute to our blog, whether it is posting a comment here or in our weekly featured artist contest or Weekly free art giveaway-be involved!!! Ok, we don't have these often but since Easter is on its way, we thought we should have a small sale in our etsy store. Many of our items are on sale and if you really find something that you like but it isn't on sale, well just convo us or mail and we might be able to work something out. :) We ship international and most of our items will ship same day or the next day-so no need to worry. At least go on over and take a look at the sale items....

Ok, I'm just going to stand up and say it, "I love T-Shirts!!" ... A lot of people forget that without a shirt, you couldn't leave your house. So in essence, a t-shirt is more than just a statement, it's your way into society. Fashion is Art-no way around it and in this post, I am going to show you two of my favorite t-shirt sites. Palmercash: Was the first t-shirt site I stumbled upon and it has never let me down (above: my newest buys from there). With a very kool/retro website and ever changing catalogue of shirts, palmercash is more like a blog than an online store. Besides having sizing charts, fabric information, international shipping and very detailed close-ups of the designs, every shirt has a bio/story that goes along with it. ...They combine vintage images with crazy/modern slang, which makes for a dangerously funny combo. Their site is endless, with new shirts coming in all the time and old-popular ones being reprinted on demand. Busted also has all the details: size charts, material info, international shipping and a great crew working the site, if you have any questions.

Moo.com is the ultimate business card site....if there was to be one, which there should always be at least one....right? Not only are they well priced and ship everywhere but they also work together with etsy. So this means that you can import into your moo account all your etsy store pictures and use them as you wish, this can also be done from flickr. Editing and customizing your cards from there on is a snap and you get to play with font, text size, color, shape, paper style and so on. Check them out!!!

Imagine if FFFFound and Ernest Hemingway had sex; the baby would be Design Observer. In what seems like an endless amount of image posting sites (30% of all websites......ok, I just made that up) here we find one that isn't about the image as much as the word. Design Observer is the critique, the dialogue that takes place when viewing images or more importantly, design and culture. I think it's worth checking out, especially if you want the 1000 words that supposedly come with every picture.

Kit and Caboodle describes itself as "...online network of contemporary jewellery makers, galleries, bloggers, teachers, students, outlets. join, network and show your work." The way we describe it is, "Unlike most jewelry blogs, which consist mostly of galleries and no content, it is refreshing to find a site that mixes both." The blog is full of great info, that is updated daily, if not hourly and has wonderful articles. We also find it a great resource for our etsy shop and we hope it helps you as well...pass the word on....

FFFFOUND! is the second social image posting/bookmarking site we will feature and it is massive. If you have never seen a site like this, it is a must-see, especially if you are into photography. I came across it by word of mouth some time ago and have seen it grow in the last 3 month by leaps and bounds. The members post some amazing pictures and it makes you think if they just spend all day scowering the internet for the most unique things they can find. As with all these sites, it is members only to post, but anyone can view the images. Keep an eye open because they do open up registration once and a while, so don't loose out.

The anticipation is over and here are the Featured Artists of the Week!!! Like earlier posted (WoW Blog) the choice for the featured artist was so hard and the participation so great (50+ posts in 24 hours) that we had to pick two people. This is the beauty and the curse of having such a competition but we are up for the challenge-rock on Etsy!! Make sure to stop by and see our featured artists, Marina Lampropoulou and Wade Solowoniuk because Etsy works on the basis of supporting each other. They are both amazingly talented artists, working in different mediums and from different parts of the world. It is beautiful to see how art can bridge people together-always amazes me. We were lucky enough to sneak into a treasury this week and guess what....we decided to use artists who posted to our blog but did not make it into our featured artist competition. The treasury turned out to be amazing and the feedback has been great, check it out. At the same time, we were lucky enough to be featured in two treasuries this week as well..... WOW!!! :) WoW is all we can say!!!! We always believed that having featured artists on the blog was a great idea, both for you and for us but we were shocked to see how many people turned out to post. It has been amazing and the over 50 posts in 24 hours prove that having this as a weekly event will rock. The only downside has been trying to pick the artist itself from all the amazing people that posted. In fact, the decision was so hard, that we decided to have two artists this week. :) For the people that did not make it, make sure to post again for the coming week and I will make the rules a little more clear with a post later this week.

Dropular is the first social image posting/bookmarking site we have featured and while it is not as large as ffffound, it has a more personal feel to it. If you have never seen a site like this, it is a must-see, especially if you are into photography. Also, keep an eye open because they do open up registration once and a while, so don't loose out. Dropular is a media bookmarking service loosely based on the idea of a droplet contributing to a pool, filling it ever-so slightly one by one. This amazing tool lets you discover, remember and share images, videos and links - all in one place.

Klimt02 is part of our K00L list, check out the site. The intention when creating Klimt02 was to show the work of contemporary artists and all those things that generates from it and can be found around this subject: know to inform, and to be informed to know. Klimt02 proposes a selection based in very specific artistic principles, and in working together with contemporary jewellery world experts. Setting up a place where information can be attained, seen, found, contributed, consulted or swapped is the starting point of this project, which a part from that, would fill up a nowadays empty and disperse space with regard to this subject.

We are proud to announce a new section to our blog and I am sure you will love it as well. Each week we will have a featured artist and a small collection of their work, both here and in our gallery. There will be a small bio and some background about the artist but mostly it is about the work. While many of the artists will be jewelry makers, this is not set in stone and we wish artists from all trades to participate.
